Joe Ungerleider, Distinguished Technical Fellow for AI Enablement at MetroStar’s Innovation Lab, is a data-driven technology leader with 22 years of experience spanning Chief Engineer, Enterprise Architect, Program Manager, and Data Scientist roles across federal, state, and commercial sectors. Across his career, one thread has stayed constant: turning emerging technical capability into mission outcomes that government sponsors and partners can actually depend on.
At MetroStar, Joe sets the strategy for how AI is adopted and operationalized across the company and for its government clients. He runs MetroStar’s AI Community of Practice, leads generative AI pilots from concept through product integration, and works directly with teaming partners and agency stakeholders to identify where AI can responsibly move from promising pilot to deployed capability. His focus is as much on governance and trust as it is on technology, ensuring AI enablement strategies hold up to mission requirements, not just demo well.
This work builds on 11 years at MITRE Corporation, most recently as a Department Head, where he set technical vision and strategy that drove exponential capability growth and instilled a culture of continuous innovation. As Chief Engineer for a Data Science Platform supporting Advanced Analytics, Joe directed platform development, data ingestion, and analytics implementation using agile methodologies, leading cross-functional teams through continuous integration and delivery. He also provided technical research, program consulting, and acquisition advisement to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, supporting more than 20 government programs tied to a major IPO initiative, ensuring sound governance while representing senior Program Director leadership.
Whether integrating data sources for critical response efforts, aligning departments to the Mission Value Chain, or shaping how AI gets adopted at scale today, Joe’s work has always come down to the same thing: building trusted technical capability that mission partners can rely on.
Joe holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in Engineering Management from George Washington University, and is currently pursuing a PhD from Robert Morris University, expected in 2028.
