Metro Hotel and Suites Melbourne, Australia

Right from our arrival the Metro Hotel and Suites had an air of friendliness, near ‘newness’ and a sense that the property was manned by a friendly and efficient team. The hotel has an excellent presence just down from the MCG (the Melbourne Cricket Ground) and a few minutes walk from the center of the city. The Melbourne Hilton is almost directly opposite.

The entrance to the hotel was welcoming with the Players Bar and Restaurant just off to one side. There was an elevator to take us to the first floor reception, however we preferred the inviting stairway. The reception was caring and hospitable and promptly arranged our check-in.

It was then to the third floor of this 4.5 star establishment. The hallways we found spacious and inviting. The entrance to our room was by virtue of a mini-hallway entrance and then we found we had been upgraded from a hotel room to a one bedroom suite. We later found the hotel comprised 70 hotel rooms and 70 one bedroom suites.

The layout, the furniture and the extent of equipment in the unit was exceptional. The spaciousness of the lounge room, kitchenette and bedroom were noticeable. Full cooking facilities were provided and even a microwave. All crockery and cutlery were provided and all was of an exceptional quality. It was difficult to fault the accommodation. The bathroom was equally well-equipped with plenty of room and bench space. The unit had its own washing machine and dryer, there were tea and coffee making facilities (which were complimentary), a mini-bar with liquors, beers, soft drinks, chocolates and nuts, a steam iron and ironing board, hairdryer in the bathroom and lots more.

After check-in we went down to the bar and had a pre-dinner drink which was reasonably priced and served promptly. Then it was the restaurant, which was not busy as it was early. The menu was fresh, again reasonably priced and had plenty of variety. We were only interested in a snack as we had taken a meal on the flight into Melbourne.

The meal was provided within about 15 minutes, the quality of which was very good, although not outstanding. We then took a quick browse around the hotel’s facilities. The outdoor swimming pool was in an attractive garden setting and there was a spa and a neighboring gym which was only sparsely equipped.

We then wandered into town. The walk was pleasant through garden surroundings. We could have taken a tram but preferred the walk which took all of seven or eight minutes. Our stay at the Metro Hotel and Suites was a brief one because of time constraints. We would have preferred it to have been longer as we found it an excellent hotel in a very good location with the management and staff enthusiastic and hospitable.

The hotel is operated by Metro Inns, the oldest Australian owned hotel chain in Australia.
